Gary was a trade union organiser before embarking upon the common professional examination course at Middlesex University and the bar vocational course at the Inns of Court School of Law. From 1973-76 he worked for the Association of Scientific Technical and Managerial Staffs (ASTMS now part of Amicus) and from 1976 to 1991 he was a National Organiser with the National Union of Journalists (NUJ). His BSc is an external London University honours degree in government completed at the then Bristol Polytechnic and the MA is in industrial relations from Warwick University.

Gary is the Head of the Employment Group at 7 New Square. He practises in all aspects of employment law representing claimants and respondents/defendants in employment tribunals, the Employment Appeal Tribunal, the County and High Court, and the Court of Appeal.

He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Department of Human Resource Management & Industrial Relations, Keele University. From 1999 to 2004 he trained full-time and lay officials of the Manufacturing, Science and Finance trade union (now Amicus) in all aspects of employment law and the handling of employment tribunals. He is a regular speaker at the General Federation of Trade Unions Advanced School.

Gary is an accredited mediator and has been accepted on to the General Council of the Bar’s list of accredited mediators. Following training with the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS), he was awarded a Certificate of Internal Workplace Mediation.

Gary is a member of the Employment Law Appeal Advice Scheme at the Employment Appeal Tribunal, has been on the Commission for Racial Equality's Panel of Advocates (B Category) from 18 June 2002, and on the Equal Opportunities Commission's Panel of Barristers from 23 May 2003.
