Heema has a uniquely combined commercial, international and human rights background. She speaks several languages and her clients have included global businesses, CIOT (Chartered Institute of Taxation), largest UK supermarket operator, media personalities, writers, musicians and inventors.
She previously worked for BDO Stoy Hayward and completed pupillage at Gray’s Inn Tax Chambers, acquiring ‘silk-level’ experience and simultaneously attending a Master’s course in International and EU Tax at Queen Mary University of London. Heema’s technical skills led to her working on the challenging issue of drafting the model UK Taxpayer’s Charter of Rights and Obligations. Heema has dealt with the design of software licences for the online-betting industry, royalty triggers, double taxation treaties and the structuring of multi-jurisdiction transactions. Prior to qualification, worked together with leading NGO’s in Geneva, such as the International Service for Human Rights and Association for the Prevention of Torture.
Prior to developing a technical practice, Heema was a general litigator and regularly appeared before the Supreme Court of Mauritius. As Counsel in a hybrid jurisdiction, she re-opened a complex long-running property case, winning both the Appeal and New Trial (now on Appeal by her opponent). She has appeared as Junior Counsel in UK and US extradition matters, including wire-fraud. During a trade mark infringement case concerning a famous French mark, she appeared against the Head of Chambers, where she completed her first pupillage. Her first mini-pupillage was with the present Attorney General, Minister of Justice and Human Rights. Heema was even selected for the lead role for a Sky Channel show. However, she decided to stick to her career in law. She will be contributing to Philip Baker QC’s future book on Taxpayer Protection (standard-setting) and she particularly enjoys bringing divergent paradigms together like IP and Finance.
